Frequently Asked Questions

About Olivelink personal media streaming software

What is Olivelink?

Olivelink is software that allows you to broadcast your personal media - video and audio - on the Internet directly from your PC.

Why is it cool?

Most other broadcasting systems require you to upload your audio and video to a webserver or 3rd party system before it can be broadcast. With Olivelink you don't need any of that. You stream your media right from your PC. It's click, click and go—you're broadcasting. Nothing could be simpler.

How does it work?

There's two parts to the Olivelink software: the Projector, which is the software you use to broadcast your media, and a Viewer, which is the software used to watch and/or listen to media being broadcast by a Projector. To broadcast, you simply start up the Projector software, click on the media you want to broadcast, and go. As long as the Projector is running on your PC, Viewers will be able to see it. To watch or listen to media, you start the Viewer, type in the name of the Projector you want to see, and go. Pretty simple.

Is there a limit to the length or size of the media?

Your broadcast can be as short or long as you want. The only limit is the amount of hard disc space you have (since the media is stored on your computer). If you want to show that 30 second music video you made in the mirror of your bathroom, that's fine. If you want to broadcast all fourteen hours of your vacation at Mooseworld Adventure Park, you can do that too.

What about quality?

Broadcast quality is a function of your available Internet bandwidth (i.e., the more bandwidth you have, the better your broadcast quality). The Olivelink Projector automatically determines how much bandwidth you have available and broadcasts the best quality media possible. If you're used to seeing those tiny little videos on the Internet, you'll be happy to know that Olivelink and a standard DSL or Cable broadband connection will deliver media quality two to three times better on average. For those with very high speed Internet connections Olivelink broadcasts at near DVD quality.

How many people can watch a broadcast at the same time?

Unlimited. Olivelink has some pretty cool "grid" technology built into it that allows it to broadcast the same quality video to one or 1 million viewers simultaneously. This is possible because each Viewer can also act as a Projector for the media currently being played. That means an unlimited number of people can tune into a Projector without bringing the system down. Better yet, Olivelink handles all of this in the background, so there's no messing with configurations and setup. You just want to show your birthday party video to Grandma, fine. You want to broadcast your birthday party video to the entire population of Norway, you can do that just as easily.

What about privacy?

Olivelink is as private or public as you want it to be. In order to view or listen to media broadcast with Olivelink, the Viewer must know the Projector name to tune into. Only want to share your media with a few family members or friends? Just tell them your Projector name and when to tune in with their Viewer. No one else will know. Want to broadcast to the entire world? Put a link to your Projector on your website or blog, post it on chatboards, or advertise it otherwise. Hundreds of thousands will be able to tune in in no time.

Best of all, when you're done broadcasting, all you have to do is turn off your Projector. Since the media is safely stored on your computer, there's no worry that it'll still be out running around the Internet long after you wanted.
